Building community resilience through tree planting and climate education is a powerful way to empower local communities to combat the impacts of climate change, and to foster a sense of ownership and collective action, enabling communities to build resilience, drive sustainable development, and create a healthier environment for generations to come.
This was established at a One-Day Workshop organized by The West Africa Hub of the African Climate Reality Project which held in Port Harcourt on the 31st of October 2025, with the theme “Building Community Resilience through Climate Education and Tree Planting”. The workshop brought together, environmental and climate change experts, community stakeholders, government agencies civil society organizations, community based organizations ,students, teachers and others.
Environmental Impact Analyst, Dr. Chizor Wisdom Dike who spoke on the topic, Understanding Climate Change and Local impacts, stated that Rivers State is among one of the 10 states that are in compliance with the climate change development framework as set up by the Federal Ministry of Environment. He however pointed out that these frameworks do not manage the local impacts of climate change on the people in the communities, who live with the climate realities of the oil and gas industries, pointing to issues of flooding, erosion, animal migration, permanent-day effect as some of the realities of the communities.
Also speaking at the program, Dr. Mercy Bello Abu spoke on the topic, Nature based solutions for adaptation, highlighting the importance of tree planting and ecosystem restoration, as a way of mitigating the impact of climate change.
She pointed out that the it is the responsibility of every human being as custodians of the earth, to care for it, for humanity to thrive. This she said can be achieved through proactive solutions and policies that protect nature.
Country Mentor of African Climate Reality Project and convener of the event, Mr. Smith Nwokoha added that climate change is a reality that is already here with us, which calls for the urgent need for actions towards mitigation and adaptation.
He stressed that tree planting is a strong and viable action towards fighting climate change and ensuring environmental reparations.
The highlight of the workshop was a tree planting exercise by all participants, teaching the younger generation to take responsibility of their environment.
