SFCG JOURNALISM FORUM ENGAGES STUDENTS OF IAUE AGAINST DRUG ABUSE



In a sensitization program for students of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, experts have warned against the danger of drug abuse, calling for concerted efforts to end the menace of drugs and its effect on young people for a better society.

The one day sensitization programme was part of the commemoration of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, marked on June 26 every year, under the Community Centred Approach to Transforming Criminality in the Niger Delta project, organized by Search for Common Ground Journalism Forum in conjunction with the Student Union Government of the institution, with the funding from the European Union.




Speaking at the event, immediate past Chairman of Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter, Promise Anele, noted that drug abuse is a mental disorder and urged victims to seek help in designated centres in the state.

Also, the Director of Okechukwu Onuchukwu Centre for  Peace and Conflict Studies, Prof Kingdom Nwaenyi, pointed out that the society has degenerated as a result of drug abuse, cultism and other social vices and called on the government to end the trend.

“Drug abuse is an evidence of a failed society. In our study we found out that when  the foundation is solid, the students will grown to ensure our society will not grow to be a failed a society. if the youths can grow above social vices like criminal activities, cultism, examination malpractice and drug abuse, our future will be assured and the sustainability will be achieved.”

The theme of this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, is  "Break the Cycle.

SEARCH AND PROJECT PARTNERS INAUGURATES STATE-LEVEL PEACE ARCHITECTURE IN RIVERS STATE

OVER 10,000 PEOPLE BENEFITS FROM EU PEACE BUILDING PROJECT IN BAYELSA, DELTA AND RIVERS STATE

The Project Steering Committee of the European Union funded project, “A Community Centered Approach to transforming violence and Criminality in the Niger Delta (CRIN-VIN)” says over ten thousand (10,000) people have benefited from the project across the Niger Delta, 9 months into the project.
