COP 29: A CALL TO AFRICAN LEADERS

As world leaders gather for yet another UNFCCCC Conference of Parties (COP29), let the welfare of the common people be at the center of deliberations and discussions.

African leaders should not see the COP as "business-as-usual", while big corporations hijack the COP process for business negotiations and unfair policies. This is not a time to promote false solutions such as Geoengineering and other rhetoric used to bypass the need to review the environmental policies across the world, especially the issues of environmental rights abuses suffered by the global south, in the name of Fossil Fuel Extraction.

Let us also remember that the big corporations in the global north have strongly contributed to the global climate crisis experienced today. Climate financing should be contributed by the global north countries to address the climate impacts in the global south.

We demand for real solutions to the climate crisis, a reduction of emissions, payment of loss and damages, reparations and policies that promote environmental protection.

Drug related conflicts were top on the list of key conflict issues at a meeting of the Rivers State Peace Architecture (SPA) and the Steering Committee of the European Union funded project, “A Community Centered Approach To Transforming Violence and Criminality in the Niger Delta (CRIN-VIN)”. OVER 10,000 PEOPLE BENEFITS FROM EU PEACE BUILDING PROJECT IN BAYELSA, DELTA AND RIVERS STATE

The Project Steering Committee of the European Union funded project, “A Community Centered Approach to transforming violence and Criminality in the Niger Delta (CRIN-VIN)” says over ten thousand (10,000) people have benefited from the project across the Niger Delta, 9 months into the project. The peace building project which kicked off in November 2023 is being implemented by Search for Common Ground and its partners, in 60 communities across 33 local government areas in Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers State, aimed at fostering inclusive community security approaches to addressing the systemic drivers of violence and criminality in the Niger Delta.
