The Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, James A. James, has called on councilors to strengthen community engagement, promote unity and ensure that governance has a direct impact on residents.
James made the call during the commissioning of internal roads at the council headquarters and the presentation of 10 vehicles to councilors, the council secretary and other officials in Opobo Town.
The event formed part of activities marking his first year in office.
The chairman described the projects as important steps towards improving administrative efficiency and service delivery at the local government level.
“This is a major step forward in building functional, efficient local governance. Good governance requires both infrastructure and administrative mobility, which we have taken that step further to construct internal roads leading to the headquarters of this great local government.
The provision of these vehicles will equip our legislators and my executive team with the mobility required to reach every ward, engage directly with our communities, and execute their oversight and administrative duties effectively,” he said.
In her remarks, the Vice Chairman, Hon. Gladys Daniel Jack, commended James for his leadership and commitment to staff welfare, describing the initiatives as beneficial to the council's operations.
The Alaboo-Designate and former Rivers State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Bennett George Daminabo, urged the councilors to make effective use of the vehicles and remain focused on delivering good governance to their constituents.
Some beneficiaries also expressed appreciation to the chairman, praising his efforts to extend development to communities in the interior parts of the local government. They pledged to support the administration in achieving its objectives.
Other activities lined up for the week-long anniversary celebration include the distribution of fishing boats and nets to fishermen, presentation of motorcycles, and the commissioning of water, sanitation and electrification projects.
The program will also feature the commissioning of a mobile police post, the flag-off of the remodeling of Nkoro Police Station, and the commissioning of a customary court complex and an ultra-modern corps members’ lodge.
The anniversary activities will conclude with events commemorating the local government's 30th anniversary and a thanksgiving service.
